What had happened in the story was that Mia had had a lot of things on her mind. The most important thing she wanted to get off her mind is breaking up with Kenny. But she didnt want to break up with him because he mostly helped her pass her class she was mostly failing in some of her classes. So when she told her grandmother about it her mother was telling her not to break up with him because he can help her pass her classes and stuff and she would do good in school. Mia was agreeing with her grandmother but then at the same time she knew that if she didnt break up with him she would be taking him for granted and she found that wrong. So she was confused and didnt know what to do. Then when Kenny called her he let her know that he loved her and she was surprised because she didnt have feelings for him at all and here he comes out of no where and tells her he loves her. Then she told her best friend Lily and when she told her she didnt believe her , She thought that she was just making it up. But what Lily didnt know was that Mia was crushing on her brother.
